About Us
Through a collaborative effort spanning Canada and Burundi, a new approach to inclusive pediatric care is taking shape. Megan Walker, Founder and CEO of WeeCare Pediatric Home Health Care in Canada, partnered with Dr. Alexis Nizigiyimana, Founder and CEO of Ubuntu Village of Life in Burundi, to develop the Ubuntu WeeCare model.
This initiative brings together a multidisciplinary Special Needs Centre and a connected community-based program focused on supporting children with special needs. Located in Mugamba, Burundi, Ubuntu-WeeCare reflects a shared commitment between Ubuntu Village of Life and WeeCare to expand access to meaningful, child-centered care.
Adrian Schauer (CEO of AlayaCare and Co-Founder of Madiro), connected with Megan where she shared her interest in international pediatric volunteer work.
Adrian introduced her to the Madiro Foundation and encouraged her to learn more about the Ubuntu Village of Life project. Soon after, Megan began connecting with Dr. Alexis and within two weeks, she traveled to Bujumbura for her first visit to both Burundi and the African continent.
Together, Dr. Alexis and Megan imagined the Ubuntu WeeCare Centre as a fully accessible, purpose-designed space offering rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, and hydrotherapy, along with mental health support, nursing care, and residential programs.
The centre will also include a working farm with animals and gardens, creating opportunities for life skills development and therapeutic experiences through agroecology and animal-assisted care.
For Dr. Alexis, this work is deeply personal. After losing his sister during childbirth in a remote village in Burundi, he was driven to establish Ubuntu Village of Life to bring essential health services closer to families who need them most.
Through Megan’s volunteer work, she uncovered a largely unseen reality, with many children with disabilities confined to their homes and without access to healthcare or education.
